Peterson, J. B., Sciver, E. V., & Doidge, N. (2019). 12 rules for life: An antidote to chaos. Toronto: Random House Canada.
Chapter 9: Assume that the person you are listening to might know something you don’t
If you haven’t read this book let me explain the bulleted list. Peterson’s 12 rules have a very no nonsense hard hitting narrative, he does waste his time not yours. So I chose to recap this one chapter they way he does for us.
Here goes: (some could be verbatim but most are paraphrased
Listening person is a representative of common humanity. He stands for the crowd. Letting the talking person listen to himself.I am a collaborator and opponent even when I am not talking. It is about sharing what you heard which connects to what they are are saying to you now. You share that thought as a person who wishes good/positive things in their life. Me - This is key, why do you say what you say? Knowing you disturb the other provoke etc Tell the truth of what he thinks not tell what he thinks is the truth. Tool - summarize what the other person has said before you speak.Conversation - like you are listening to yourself. Need to have one foot in chaos and one foot firmly planted in your thought (order) - open to transform and change while stay true to your order, The Tao of Listening.Precision in language - minimise the nonsense.
